Employee Spotlight: Nicole Ray

Volusion is what it is because of the people who work within its four walls. So we thought we’d tell you more about some of those people. What makes them tick? Why do they come to work each day? And what do they look forward to doing when they leave the office? In this Employee Spotlight series, you’ll get a glimpse at one featured employee each month. This month, we talked to Recruiting Manager Nicole Ray. Here’s what she had to say:

What do you do here at Volusion?

I am a Recruiting Manager on the People and Culture Team.

How did you get into the field?

By chance. I was in my mid twenties and had an administrative job that I loathed. I decided to take a risk, quit that job and take a temporary recruiting specialist job with a staffing agency. It eventually lead to permanent employment and I really liked what I was doing.

What’s the most challenging thing about your job?

Putting on my manager hat and figuring out how to effectively lead my team. I am fairly new to the role and taking it in stride. Everyday poses a new and exciting challenge.

What are you most proud of in your career? What about outside of your career?

I pride myself on my work ethic. I don’t like doing things halfheartedly, and I am constantly striving to do better. I feel that I am solely responsible for where I am today professionally, and that didn’t come without some sweat and tears.

Overall, I am most proud of my level of perseverance when the going gets tough. To me there is nothing more challenging than juggling a career and a family. Especially as a mom. I am relied on by so many people and somehow I am able to remain sane :-).

What do you love most about Volusion?

My team, for sure. People and Culture is everything. We are all super supportive of one another and we have each others' back. I’m not sure everyone truly knows what my team does behind the scenes to keep us all happy (and fed).

What’s the first thing you do when you get off work?

Depends on the kind of day it was. I could be picking my son up from daycare or promptly heading home to have a glass of wine.

What do you like to do in your spare time? What are your hobbies?

Travel, but doesn't everyone say that? I really do love to travel; even with my three year old. I think in his brief time on earth he’s had 10 or 12 plane rides. I also really like to garden and compost, although I am a bit of a novice. I recently started making my own bread which has been so much fun! I also enjoy crafting and sewing when I have the time. And I love the New England Patriots!

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

I wouldn’t call it the craziest but it's cool. I sat on the top of Cadillac Mountain and watched the sunrise. Cadillac Mountain is the first place to see the sun rise in the USA.

Where are you going on your next vacation?

Probably to Maine (my husband and I are both from there). Although this is a constant topic in my household.

If you could open an online store, what would you sell?

I would make and sell handmade state art. I have been making them for my family as gifts and they are a hit!
